Sir, - Before readers rush to congratulate Adrian Bailey on his election as the new Member of Parliament for West Bromwich West, I would point out two facts. One, the Conservatives have not contested this seat since Betty Boothroyd was elected as Speaker of the House of Commons in 1992. Two, Councillor Bissell was a superb candidate who achieved a three per cent swing to the Conservatives in a rock solid Labour seat.
Despite what some pundits may say, this was a good result for the Tories.
What should be of concern is the turnout of 27.6 per cent - a worrying statistic for all those who believe in the democratic tradition in Britain.
