20/12/00 - Prince William at work: Chris writes to The Times

Prince William at work

Sir, How wonderful to see Prince William's charitable work in Chile (reports, December 11). William came across as a down-to-earth, well- rounded, kind young man who is a fine example to today's youth.

Presumably the republican, liberal, media elite realises what an uphill struggle it now faces.

Yours faithfully,

Prince's work in Chile

Sir, Mr Chris D. Kelly (letter, December 20) is in for a bit of a disappointment if he assumes that the "republican, liberal, media elite" will retire to lick their wounds on becoming aware of Prince William's charitable work in Chile.

I would imagine that the Prince's overriding feeling when he finally becomes King will be one of accute embarassment at becoming crowned head of a state that still indulges in this fuedal, divisive, class-ridden practice.

My bet is that, like his mother, he will seek either to modernise the whole antiquated business, or hopefully, bring about the collapse of the monarchy itself.

Yours faithfully,

ROBIN STANLEY
