16/02/01 - Adding strength to the euro: Chris writes to The Birmingham Post

Sir, - The European Union's announcement that the British economy has met all the criteria necessary for entry in to the single currency is not just worthless but is also meaningless.

Britain has the fourth largest economy in the world and would therefore be in a position to join the Euro at any stage should the British people ever vote to scrap the pound in a referendum.

No wonder EU finance ministers are so keen to promote the possibility of Britain joining the Euro - British entry would strengthen the currency not water it down.

In any case, even if Britain's economy was not strong, the EU could fiddle the figures or move the goalposts to allow entry as was the case with Italy.
