09/03/00 - Restore monument to former glory: Chris writes to The Birmingham Post

Sir, - Wolverhampton is a town to be proud of, not least because of its history as one of the oldest urban settlements in the country.

It is, therefore, sad to see a major monument to the town's history in such a sorry state. I am referring, of course, to Wulfruna's Well on Gorsebrook Road.

The monument to Lady Wulfruna was erected at the beginning of the last century and one can now only imagine the well in its former glory.

Today it is surrounded by a few insignificant plants and iron gates that are badly in need of attention.

The embankment on which the monument sits is nothing short of a disgrace - untrimmed bushes have been left to grow wild and are littered with rubbish.

The bridge only yards from the monument is covered with graffiti. It is time the Labour council acted to clean up this mess and restore Lady Wulfruna's memorial so that it can once again take its rightful place as a proud testament to the town's history.
